Last word on Indians at Beijing Olympics

My 82 year old aunt was greatly disturbed the other day because of India's Olympics performance. She said, "Boxing, wrestling... are these sports? Hurting each other... ". I pointed out that the other medal, the big medal, came from shooting guns, which if someone from Iran or North Korea would have won, Mr. Bush would have labeled as WMD. She said, "Still, they are only practising... hitting targets, not a person".

Then I came out with my ace of spades, saying, "These games of archery / shooting was the cause of Ramayan. If only King Dasarath would find a gentler pastime than target practise with arrows, Ramayan would never have happened". To avoid any counter point, I quickly added. "And look at how much drama a game of target practise created", referring to the archery competition during Draupadi's swayambhar. My aunt diverted the topic, "I like gymnastics".

Talking about gymnastics (and India and Olympics), did you check out the Israeli rhythmic gymnastic team's performance in the three rings and two clubs routine? The background music was "Dhoom Tana" from Om Shanti Om.

Nope, didn't check out that performance.:-(
What was wrong with Dasarath's pastime anyway? I don't think that was your 'ace of spades'. Why did Shravana's parents ask him to go and bring water for them? They had caused a lot of pain to their son who had to carry them about like that. When their son finally died to fulfill another one of their wishes,did they realize their faults and curse Dasarath? They themselves should have been cursed by someone!

@Butterfly
err... because they were blind and were dependent on Shravana for almost all their needs?

You are saying because they sent their son to fetch water for them, they are to be blamed for his death? And Dasarath, who was hunting, that too based on sound, is not to be blamed?

I am saying that Shravana's parents are to be blamed for his death because they never understood their son.In a dense forest,did they not realize that their son might meet with some danger if he went to search for water? They could have suppresed their wish at least once...

Hmm... so those people who got killed in the bus accident on VIP Road a few months ago, they died because some of them were fulfilling their parent's dream of going to college. So the parents are to be blamed for sending their kids to college? Some of them were trying to go to office so that they could feed their family. So the family is to be blamed? Not the rash driving?

I can understand your blaming Shravana's parents for not being sensitive to his needs, but I don't agree with the point that they are to be blamed for his death. And I have never heard that Shravana complained. Even while dying he ensured his parents got the water.

I suppose you have never felt thirst in the wilderness. If you had, you would not ask why did the blind parents ask him to go and fetch water. I have faced such a situation on a hike with two more friends, and having found a stream after a few hours, we drank water from it, overlooking the water spiders and other small insects in it.
